GAY LOGO + The Pink Triangle

Description

Please read below to see what I have added about the symbolism of the Pink Triangle :pride: and the Gay Holocaust.

This piece was designed to denote a Friend-to-Friend theme, GBLT Community, DIVERSITY in the GBLT Community, GBLT people working together for a common cause, and Unity under the Pink Triangle :pride:, a symbol used by the Nazis to identify and label Homosexuals for eventual imprisonment or extermination, and had to be worn in prisons, work camps, and concentration camps. We persevere, and now wear and display the pink triangle with PRIDE and it is a symbol of GAY RIGHTS :pride:.

I DO NOT TOLERATE DIVERSITY, I CELEBRATE IT.

GAY LOGO DESIGN

I wished to increase impact through simplicity of geometric reflective form and clean lines. The Pink Triangle :pride: is the symbolic unifier of all things gay, and also symbolizes the perseverance of Homosexuals through the Gay Holocaust, taking that which once victimized us, and turned it into a BADGE of homosexual Pride, Unity, Courage, and Gay Rights.

My hope is that this will bring you new awareness of the significance of the Pink Triangle in homosexual history, and its symbolic importance to all in the GBLT community.

This was a Pro Bono piece done for the Friend-to-Friend GBLT Volunteer Counseling Program, where I was a volunteer counselor. The founding principle was that people are more likely to talk to a peer about a personal crisis than to go see a professional counselor.

HOMOSEXUAL VICTIMS OF THE NAZI HOLOCAUST

In Germany, between 1933-45, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested as homosexuals, of which some 50,000 were officially sentenced. Most of these men served time in prisons and forced to work in labor camps, but there is no way to know how many died there.

An estimated 15,000 of those sentenced were incarcerated in concentration camps where they were subjected to medical experiments, including lobotomies, and many were sent to the gas chambers.

It is unclear how many of the 15,000 eventually perished in the camps, but leading scholar Ruediger Lautman believes that the death rate of homosexuals in concentration camps may have been as high as 60%.

Homosexuals in the camps were treated in an unusually cruel manner by their captors, and were also persecuted by their fellow inmates. This was a factor in the high death rate for homosexuals, compared to other groups.

Adding to the HORROR, since Homosexuals were convicted in criminal courts, many Gay men were transferred to the criminal prison systems after the camps were liberated. Some men were even re-arrested and imprisoned based on evidence of homosexuality found during the Nazi years.

After the war, the treatment of homosexuals in concentration camps went unacknowledged by most countries, and  It was not until the 1980s that governments began to acknowledge this episode, and not until 2002 that the German government apologized to the gay community. This period still provokes controversy, however. In 2005, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the Holocaust which included the persecution of homosexuals.

The Holocaust Museums in Israel and Washington D.C. initially refused to acknowledge Homosexuals who died in the concentration camps, until Public OUTRY finally forced them to make mention.

In Contrast, you can find Dedicated monuments to Gay victims of the Holocaust in London (UK), San Francisco (California), Anchorage (Alaska), San Sabba (Italy), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Sydney (Australia), a large basin filled with pink water will be built in 2007 in Morzinplatz, Vienna, at the former Gestapo headquarters, to remember the homosexual victims of the Nazi regime, and recently a new monument has been built in Berlin (Germany). I have personally visited the ones in Amsterdam, London, and San Francisco.

:pride: Some of you may notice that the Pink triangle is tall in shape. This is the shape that the Nazis used on prisoner markings for Homosexuals.

What group of humans has been so consistently persecuted for being born the way they were (not counting being born into religions)?
